From IMDb: “A group of high-school students, who are infused with unique superpowers, harness their abilities in order to save the world.”

So I was never a “Power Rangers” kid. I don’t know how I missed it all as a child but somehow I did. My husband, on the other hand, was super excited about this nostalgic revamp of one of his favourite shows, so a lot of my comments on this movie will have come from him.

It was fun. Yeah OK it got a bit questionable in the second half where the big bad surfaced and a whole town got destroyed while they were saving the world and all that, but it was still fun. The first half with all the characters learning more about each other was fantastic, and could have made for a great coming of age movie on its own.

A lot of the reviews I read applauded the movie for it’s diversity: the cast includes a white male, white female, black male, a Latina and an Asian; someone on the autism spectrum, a lesbian … While it is fantastic that Hollywood is going to the effort to create such a diverse main cast, there is still the issue that our lead male and female – Red Ranger and Pink Ranger – are still both white. Only a small niggle, but for me, it is still a niggle nonetheless. More progressiveness please Hollywood!

My husband said for the nostalgic value it was a fun ride of a movie; he did say it was a shame that the Megazord didn’t keep it’s bright colours and looked more like a Transformer, but he is a hardcore fan of the classic show, and he said he enjoyed it a lot. He always loved the Green Ranger, and he said he found in interesting that Rita Repulsa was heavily suggested to have been the Green Ranger back in her day. He also said he loved the little nod to the Green Ranger in the mid credit scene.

I’m repeating myself here, but the movie was just fun. It’s not going to win any awards, the actors were generally all unknowns (apart from Elizabeth Banks) but they were all very well cast and seemed to have a lot of fun in the movie. I did too 🙂

My rating: 6.5/10
